it seems logical that there are only two possible reasons for this:
1. Warriors need major buffing
or
2. Most people are ignorant about the usefulness of Warriors
so i want to ask you guys: which of these is the case? and a supplementary question: why is that the case?

You could make a group with nothing but warriors.

its funny to me that the warrior is extemely weak to hexes and conditions yet at the same time a w/mo has the capablity to remove the conditions and hexes them selves. so my question is with so many w/mo out there why is hexes and conditions only thing complained about? then you have the w/mes which has hex breaker preventing hexes in the first place and shatter hex. not to mention cry of frustation to stop the spells.
like previous statments people are not using their skills effectively.

I'm a warrior and I do just fine without a team being built specifically around me. The trick is now to do as many things other than tank as you can. For example, you can do a ton of damage. As a hammer aftershock war, the backbreaker combo deals 300 damage in 4 sec. Unless another monk spots this in time, you can kiss yourself good by. Dealing this much damage and having the knockdown ability means your monk can bring a remove condition and you can kill anyone he wants.
I do understand that there are more things against warriors number wise than things agains casters. Count the number of skills that do blind/ evade/ block/weaken and then count the number of things that do dazed or things like it (i'll count for you: 3) and you see that casters have the advantage in that department. You could argue that there are things that cancel spell casting, but none but the dazed condition cancel multiple spells over time.
Now lets add up the prevented damage. A warrior swinging away hits for (i'm going to use numbers from the ever weak but popular sword) 15-22 a shot vs a caster (since thats who you should be hitting) so if you prevent 10 hits, you prevent roughly 200 damage. If you prevent 1 chain lighting, you prevent 140 x 3 damage. So, before you start whining about being outnumbered, realize which numbers count.

Problem with most warriors is that they expect themselves to be primary damage dealers, and become upset when not accomodated. Warriors must understand its his/her job to disrupt/kd casters and assist spikers. Unfortunately, 99% dont. However, those clueless hordes tend to carry big warning signs with them: shields.
Also, why bother with Backbreaker when you have Devastating + Heavy Blow?

Is it true that sword and axe warriors really are so useless in PvP? I haven`t done PvP much, just some arenas and did pretty well with my axe. Axe gives good criticals when casters are running away (I use sprint of course). This combined with some good smiting skills is quite nice actually.

It's very true.. I've pretty much quit the game due to frustration of dealing with the 1000 ways a sword/axe warrior gets shut down in about 2 seconds. If I were to start playing again I'd absolutely go with a hammer in pvp. Shield is worthless and the sword/axe won't do enough disrupting/damage to kill anything.

You could always use mend ailment or purge conditions. I don`t say that hammer is a bad weapon at PvP, it might well be the best but I disagree that axes are completely useless.
About warrior´s uselessness in PvP...
Yesterday I fought at Lion`s Arch arena with my lvl 19 w/mo and did quite well I must say. In one fight I attacked a lvl 20 Ele and it was pretty much 1v1 fight, other players were fighting each other elsewhere.
At the beginning I casted Live Vicariously on myself. When fighting that ele I used flurry to raise adrenalin and health and then I used dismember and axe rake just to prevent her from running away. When I saw her casting a spell I used disrupting chop. I did it all the time actually and she never got many spells off because of that.
Then I just beat her to death with penetrating chops and dismember. And I did it with a max damage axe with no upgrades.
From my experience axe is a pretty good weapon in PvP too. And a warrior can definitely win a caster on 1v1 fight despite what many people say... It just takes some luck and good timing to do that (just like any PvP).

i have found thta mt w/e with backbreaker and air ele skills is a good mix ican stand by the monk and cast lightening strike and then when ppl get close cast backbreaker and then there down for 4 seconds and then when there up cast gale which gives casters the easy job of finishing them off
and i also use heavy blow and then devesating hammer for a bit of extra konckdown

Axes and Swords seem "bad" because you need enchantments on them to make them into the scary death bombs that they really are. An Axe guy under JI+TF+double orders hitting an Eviscerate or Executioners strike is BRUTAL especially if he criticals.

eviscerate
disrupting chop
axe rake
sprint
frenzy
rend enchantments
res sig
he took these
Penetrating
cleave
disrupting chop
executioners strike
tigers fury
sprint
charm animal
beastial pounce
together we out damaged a w/mo that had shield of regen on :/ and owned anything till we finally lost at 15 wins in team arena =[
Oh with 10 str + penetrating blow = 30% armor pen D:

I'm not using monk as a secondary or that might work.
